ArsDigital makes use of the Epson 9800 printer. The 9800 model uses the K3 8 color ink system to render images. Because it prints up to 2880x1440 dots per inch, it has no visible dot pattern. The produced images maintain all the tonalities and hues of the original file.

Epson’s UltraChrome inks are one of the most important advances made in printing. In black and white printing, subtle toning can be achieved, when using fine art, rag papers, that is almost indistinguishable from platinum prints . The ink is formulated to be resistant to UV light and is rated to remain true for 100 years and up, according to Wilhelm Imaging Research, Inc. (www.wilhelm-research.com) who conduct research on the stability and preservation of traditional and digital photographs. ArsDigital principally makes use of both Epson and Hahnemuele archival, fine art papers, although working with others that might be preferred is possible.

Once a piece of film is scanned - assuming this is needed - and the file spotted and cleaned up, a an 8 x 10" proof is produced , with whatever burning and dodging and other adjustments are desired. This becomes the BAT (Bat å Tire ), which, once approved and signed, becomes the basis for whatever enlargement is required.
